This unfortunate incident took place recently in Cape Town and raised concerns among many of the potential fire risk of installing solar panels. This is not the first time this type of incident has occurred, and it probably won’t be the last – as long as unqualified and inadequately supervised installers, and cheap materials are used to do such installations.
Unfortunately such incidents can create the impression that the technology is at fault, but this is very rarely the case. More often than not it is the installing entity that is at fault, by either failing to adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations regarding mounting and cabling specifications, and/or by incorrectly configuring the inverter.
